Na een propagandavergadering in de RK Volksbond aan de Wal, waar een zekere heer Van Vuuren de geïnteresseerden toesprak, werd besloten een leeszaal in te richten.&lt;br&gt;<br /> De oprichting vond plaats op 1 mei 1916 in het gebouw Nieuwstraat 6, waar een ruimte gevonden was in een “alcoholvrij lokaal” boven de wijnkelders van de heer Boex. Het was de 32e leeszaal die in Nederland was geopend.&lt;br&gt;<br /> Eerste voorzitter was gemeenteraadslid P. van der Putt (1885-1957).&lt;br&gt;<br /> Eerste directeur was de heer De Leijer. Directrice van het eerste uur was Bets Glaudemans (1897-1995).&lt;br&gt;<br /> <br /> Per 1 mei 1919 kreeg de RK Openbare Leeszaal zijn eigen plek in een pand aan de Rechtestraat 52, het pand waar ook de modezaak Witteveen gevestigd was. In 1923 en 1926 maakt Witteveen reclame voor door hen verkochte kinderjurken, “zie onze zij-etalage ingang leeszaal”.&lt;br&gt;<br /> <br /> In 1923 had de OLB 5 filialen&lt;br&gt;<br /> -hoofdkantoor Rechtestraat 52 (1929)&lt;br&gt;<br /> volksbibliotheek Rechtestraat&lt;br&gt;<br /> -Kloosterdreef&lt;br&gt;<br /> -vloksbond Wal&lt;br&gt;<br /> -villapark Tongelreseweg&lt;br&gt;<br /> -Tongelre&lt;br&gt;<br /> <br /> Het verslag van het koperen jubileumfeest werd in de krant ED van 2-11-1928 gepubliceerd.&lt;br&gt;<br /> <br /> Een filiaal van de RK Leeszaal was gepland voor het jaar 1930 in het hoekpand aan de Gladiolusstraat in Stratum. Architect is NV Bouwonderneming Brederode uit Utrecht.
